Oregon man wins $150,000 from 'accidental' Powerball ticket purchase at Food 4 Less

Former public works director Michael Faught says that he didn't know what exactly he was doing when he bought a Powerball ticket recently — but that confusion paid off.

MEDFORD, Ore. — Former public works director Michael Faught is $150,000 richer after stumbling into a huge Powerball win from a ticket purchased at Food 4 Less in Medford.

"As a former public works director, Michael Faught can tell you the Ph of municipal wastewater, or the perfect angle a roadway needs to be to deal with stormwater run-off. After winning $150,000 playing Powerball, he can also tell you what a Power Play is," the Oregon Lottery said in a statement.

Faught and his wife now live in Lebanon, but they were on a road trip with their travel trailer when they stopped to pick up some Powerball tickets at Food 4 Less.

“The customer service clerk wanted to know if I wanted to purchase the $3 per line ticket,” Faught said. “I had no clue what she was talking about as we rarely purchase lottery tickets, so I just said yes. That decision ended up tripling our win from $50,000 to $150,000!”

Faught ended up matching four numbers and the Powerball for the drawing on Saturday, March 23. Since he purchased the "Power Play" multiplier option, and the multiplier drawn was three, Faught tripled his prize for the $1 extra he paid.

The winning numbers were 24-25-52-60-66 with a Powerball of 05. The jackpot for that drawing was $625 million. Faught said winning $150,000 was surreal — he checked the ticket at a gas station on his way home and couldn’t believe his luck.

“My wife and I were excited, elated, giddy and soooo happy!” Faught said. “We feel so blessed that we were able to pay off some major bills as a result of the win.”

Faught and his wife have talked to a financial advisor and are planning to put new wood floors in their Lebanon home. He also hopes to do some minor upgrades to his motorcycle. The family had already planned a trip to Disneyland, and Faught told the Oregon Lottery that they used some of the prize money to “enhance” the trip.
