Oregon Lawmakers Nominate Students for Service Academy Studies

Students interested in attending the Air Force, Naval, Merchant Marine or Military academies across the US can earn nominations from Oregon lawmakers like Representative Greg Walden.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — For Oregon students interested in attending one of the U.S.' most prestigious service academies, earning a nomination from one of the state's top lawmakers can be an essential way to get a proverbial foot in the door.

“It is always an honor and privilege to nominate outstanding young Oregonians to our nation’s service academies each year,” said Representative Greg Walden (R-Hood River). “I encourage students who are eager to grow intellectually, lead by example, and serve our country to apply for a nomination to one of the prestigious service academies through my office."

Service academies include the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; the Military Academy at West Point, New York; the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.

Each year, students from across Oregon’s Second District are nominated by Walden for acceptance to the service academies after being recommended by the representative's Service Academy Nomination Board. The Board consists of active and retired military officers who interview potential candidates for the service academies, then issue recommendations based on the students' "academic performance, extracurricular involvement and character."

Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley also provide similar nominations for service academy aspirants. For Wyden's application, click here. For Merkley's application, click here.

This year seven students from Oregon’s Second District were accepted to the service academies of their choice after being nominated by Walden—including two from Jackson County and one from Klamath County.
