Oregon Health Authority says state has surpassed 100,000 COVID-19 cases

Oregon passed a milestone on Friday, reaching more than 100,000 cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Officials at the Oregon Health Authority noted a milestone in the coronavirus pandemic on Friday, reporting that the state has surpassed 100,00 cases of the virus since it reached Oregon in February.

“While this significant number reflects how widely the novel coronavirus has spread within our communities, I want to acknowledge every Oregonian who has been affected by this pandemic and thank the vast majority of Oregonians who’ve taken steps to protect their families, their neighbors, and the most vulnerable members of our communities,” said OHA Public Health Director Rachael Banks.

OHA reported 1,390 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total since the pandemic began to 100,308.

“COVID-19 hasn’t spread as fast as it has in most other states," Banks continued. "But every infection, every hospitalization and every death are one too many. The safe and effective vaccines we’re distributing across the state offer real hope we can end this pandemic. But it’s too soon to drop our guard.”

Two of Oregon's neighbor states, Idaho and Nevada, have fewer residents but have reported more total cases — 125,000 and 194,000, respectively, OHA said. Oregon also has the 44th lowest level of average daily cases in the nation, according to the CDC.

The state also reported 21 more deaths attributed to COVID-19 on Friday, bringing Oregon's total to 1,304. Coronavirus hospitalizations across the state have fluctuated, but OHA said that there were 539 patients on Friday and 111 in intensive care.

According to OHA's latest modeling, cases are likely to increase in the days ahead, with the virus' "effective reproduction rate" most recently estimated at 1.22 — meaning that every person who contracts the virus will give it to at least one other person, on average. Depending on how diligent Oregonians are with their precautions, infection rates could either climb back to early November levels or plummet to rates not seen since October.

"The model shows that Oregonians are travelling less frequently and that three out of four are regularly wearing masks or face coverings," state officials said.

The new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases reported Friday were in the following counties: Baker (7), Benton (34), Clackamas (117), Clatsop 6), Columbia (6), Coos (18), Crook (10), Curry (10), Deschutes (59), Douglas (14), Grant (3), Harney (2), Hood River (29), Jackson (76), Jefferson (27), Josephine (30), Klamath (62), Lake (1), Lane (93), Lincoln (7), Linn (43), Malheur (17), Marion (153), Morrow (4), Multnomah (200), Polk (18), Tillamook (15), Umatilla (59), Union (1), Wasco (30), Washington (221), Yamhill (18).
