Oregon Health Authority reports six more deaths, 83 new cases of COVID-19

The Oregon Health Authority reported 83 new confirmed cases in an update on Wednesday, in addition to six more deaths caused by the virus.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon public health officials have identified 83 new cases of the new coronavirus in the state as of 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, as well as six more deaths attributed to the virus.

The latest death brings the state total up to 44.

The Oregon Health Authority said that there are now a total of 1,321 people in the state who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 through a positive test.

OHA is reporting 58 total new cases in the following counties: Clackamas (6), Columbia (1), Curry (1), Deschutes (5), Jackson (4), Klamath (1), Lane (2), Linn (3), Marion (17), Morrow (2), Multnomah (16), Polk (1), Tillamook (1), Umatilla (3), Washington (16), and Yamhill (4).

Samples for 24,306 people have tested negative for COVID-19 in the state so far.

Examples of people who have recovered fully after testing positive for the coronavirus have been reported only sporadically by local health officials thus far, and the state has yet to report a count of a total across the state.

OHA has a partial, but incomplete count of how many people in the state have been hospitalized from the virus. According to that data, at least 326 Oregonians have been hospitalized.

State numbers still vary widely. While the state lists only 146 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized, that number rises to 400 when suspected COVID-19 patients are included — indicating that many still have not received results from a completed test.

OHA gave the following information about each of the new fatalities in the state:

  • Oregon’s 39th COVID-19 death is a 74-year-old man in Linn County, who tested positive on March 22 and died on April 3 at his residence. He had underlying medical conditions.
  • Oregon’s 40th COVID-19 death is a 97-year-old man in Linn County, who tested positive on March 15 and died on April 4 at his residence. He had underlying medical conditions.
  • Oregon’s 41st COVID-19 death is an 87-year-old woman in Multnomah County, who tested positive on March 28 and died on April 6 at her residence. She had underlying medical conditions.
  • Oregon’s 42nd COVID-19 death is a 41-year-old woman in Multnomah County, who tested positive on April 5 and died on April 8 at Oregon Health and Sciences University. She had underlying medical conditions.
  • Oregon’s 43rd COVID-19 death is a 66-year-old man in Multnomah County, who tested positive on March 31 and died on April 5 at his residence. He had underlying medical conditions.
  • Oregon’s 44th COVID-19 death is a 74-year-old man in Benton County, who tested positive on March 26 and died on April 8 at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis. He had underlying medical conditions.

New dashboard to help visualize COVID-19 data in Oregon

On Monday, OHA unveiled a new dashboard "to help visualize COVID-19 data and trends in Oregon." The two graphs show Oregon’s epidemiological curve and the number of Oregonians who have been tested for COVID-19.

"These data are provisional. Our team of epidemiologists continues to review and verify data, so our reported numbers will change. As we get more information, we update the data from previous days," the agency said.
