The University of Oregon is implementing a plan to prepare students for an active shooter situation, while an area high school parent is sending her kids to school with bulletproof backpacks.

Students and faculty at the University of Oregon learned what to do in the case of an active shooter Wednesday.

Organizers held an active shooter drill, and reinforced the best practice of the “Run, Hide and Fight” concept.

The idea is that the first option is to run as far away from the shooter as possible.

If you can’t do that, organizers encourage hiding in a safe place, locking and blocking doors.

The last option is to fight for your life.

One student said he’s glad the school is offering the learning opportunity. Organizers said the training on Wednesday was the first of four sessions the university is hosting throughout the month.

The next training will be held on March 13 at the Franklin Building.

Meanwhile, an Oregon parent is using bulletproof backpacks to protect her children in case of a school shooting.

Troutsdale resident Mikayla Hull said her children have worn Kevlar backpacks for four years. Hull indicated she took this extra step after a school shooting at Reynolds High School in 2014.

A 15-year-old boy brought an AR-15 into the classroom and fatally shot a classmate, and wounded a teacher.

Hull now works at the school, and said the shooting impacted her deeply.

Each backpack comes with a certificate proving the item has undergone ballistic testing, but law enforcement warn parents that the tests are not entirely realistic because they’re conducted in a controlled environment.

The focus on school safety and preparedness has increased in recent weeks following the shooting rampage that left 17 people dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14.
