WILSONVILLE, Ore--- On Wednesday, The OSAA Executive Board has decided not to cancel Spring championship events, but to continue the current suspension. The current suspension of all Spring activities lasts until April 28.

The OSAA Executive Board did say that if Governor Brown orders school closures for the remainder of the year, the OSAA will continue to align with those closures and cancel Spring activities.

The OSAA also mentioned venue challenges. For example, Western Oregon University has shut down all of its athletic facilities until June 30 and will not be able to host the 3A, 2A, and 1A Track and Field State Championships. The OSAA is contacting other potential track venues to determine interest and availability.

Board members also discussed the potential of moving Spring activities and state championships into the summer and are are not supportive of that idea. They have concerns about staffing and personnel costs for school districts already facing financial impacts.

The OSAA has been working with Chief Medical Advisor and the OSAA's Sports Medicine Advisory Committee Dr. Mick Koester to create safety guidelines if schools are able to continue activities in the Spring.

The OSAA has approved these guidelines:

  • an initial 7‐day period with practices only, no contests
  • limiting practices to once per day and no more than three hours in length
  • maintaining the current requirement of no more than six consecutive days without a rest day
  • continuing heat warnings as appropriate to weather and baseball pitch count limitations
  • limiting the number of contests allowed in a week specific to each activity (more details to come later)
  • emphasizing late afternoon starts and weekend contests when possible to limit loss of class time

The OSAA Executive Board has an online meeting scheduled for April 15 to discuss this situation and take any action that is necessary regarding Spring activities and state championships.

NewsWatch 12 Sports will give updates on that meeting as soon as they are available.
