The Oregon Health Authority announced 678 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases, and five new deaths today, bringing the state’s case total to 168,795. The state’s death toll is now 2,439.

OHA is also reporting 168 breakthrough cases of COVID-19. A breakthrough case is where one tests positive after at least 14 days since their second vaccination. These cases were identified through April 2, and include three deaths.

OHA public health officials say it’s a reminder that no vaccine is 100% effective, and vaccine breakthrough cases will occur.

The 168 breakthrough cases represent a small percentage of those already fully vaccinated, which total more than 700,000 in the state so far. The breakthrough cases range statewide, with cases being reported in 25 counties, and each health care preparedness region. OHA is not reporting the regions in which the deaths took place.

Many of the people who tested positive were asymptomatic and had been tested for other reasons. None of the breakthrough cases were associated with a COVID-19 variant.

Epidemiologists at the and local levels are investigating breakthrough cases and working with the CDC to collect information that may provide insight into breakthrough cases.

Three fewer patients are hospitalized since yesterday, with today’s total of 168 statewide. There are 38 patients with COVID-19 in ICU beds, which is four fewer than yesterday. More information about hospital capacity can be found here.
