"We have openings constantly."

MEDFORD, Ore. -- Nurses say there's a shortage of nursing instructors. And they add that it's contributing to the nationwide nursing shortage.
Debbie Hogenson is a charge nurse at the ICU at Providence Medford Medical Center. She says there is abundance of students applying to nursing programs, but they're turned away because there aren't enough instructors.

She adds this means an abundance of job openings.

“We have openings constantly and nursing…is an awesome career," Hogenson said. "We have it’s a multi-faceted occupation."

America needs more good nurses.

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the occupation is expected to grow 36 percent from 2016 to 2026. That's partly because the baby boomer generation is aging.

And a solution to that, is more certified nurses.

Kristina Scheunuman, also a charge nurse at the ICU, says it's being certified is a big accomplishment.

"It's actually a board-certified exam that we take to be certified," Scheuneman said. "So it’s just as strenuous as some of the physician boards they take, so it’s a pretty impressive thing for nurses to do that."

She says it shows true commitment.

"When you become certified it’s just one way to show that you are the best nurse that you can be," said Scheuneman. "It puts your unit at a higher level to when you certified nurses."
