North, South Medford Open Enrollment Won't Change Athletic Transfer Process

Despite the fact it is now easier for those who live outside Medford to attend either North or South Medford High School, current high school athletes must follow the same guidelines as always.

MEDFORD -- For the first time, the Medford School District is offering open enrollment to attend the public schools. Those interested in applying can visit MSD's website and must fill out an application by April 1.

This does not change much if you are a current high school athlete looking to transfer to a Medford public high school, though.

"They really can't come for athletic reasons, but there are some other mechanisms with hardship and those things they could possibly apply for," District Athletic Director Amy Tiger said, "I would warn people those aren't a given."

For current eighth graders, who will be freshman during the 2018-19 school year, it should make the transfer process a little easier. Those students would be instantly eligible for athletics if accepted to one of the two schools, because they have not begun their high school athletic career yet.

Students from Eagle Point and Central point areas will go to North Medford while those from Phoenix and Ashland areas will go to South Medford. There are 50 spots open at each school and if there are more than 50 applications for either school, accepted students will be decided through a lottery system.

Athletes currently in high school athletics who wish to transfer to one of the two schools will still have to follow the same protocol already put in place by the Oregon State Athletic Association.

“After the open enrollment period, any time through the year, they can ask for an inter-district transfer," Tiger said, "If their district releases them and ours accepts them, then they can come."

To be immediately eligible for sports, though, students must have this granted in the summer in between school years. There is one more thing Tiger warns about if you are a prospective transfer athlete.

“One of the other main things to be careful of and mindful of is if you have had any connections with our coaches prior, then you come [to North or South Medford], that’s considered affiliation," Tiger said.

Affiliation often comes between a player and coach from different high schools during skills camps for the specific sport. If the athlete has made this type of contact, they must fill out an "Intent to Transfer" form on the OSAA website, which can be found right here. This gives OSAA notice, and it also requires approval from the current and destination school district superintendents.

If you have any questions regarding transfer rules, you can always call the Medford School District's office at (541) 842-3636.
