BROOKINGS, Ore. — A woman visiting Natural Bridges along the southern Oregon coast near Brookings fell to her death from a cliffside Monday, according to the Curry County Sheriff's Office.

Brookings Police dispatch received a 911 call reporting that a woman had fallen in the area about 12 miles north of Brookings, and the information was passed on to the Curry County Sheriff's Office. Dispatch said that they had paged the Brookings and Cape Ferello Fire Departments, in addition to Cal Ore Life Flight Ambulance, and asked the CCSO's Search & Rescue rope team respond along with the on-duty deputies.

Sheriff's Sergeant Mai Mello arrived at the scene and got in contact with the caller, Kim Maloy, a family member of the victim. Maloy said that her sister-in-law, 60-year-old Glenda Tucker of North Carolina, had fallen roughly 300 feet from a cliff and into the ocean. Maloy's husband had tried to climb down to reach Tucker, and was stuck on the side of a cliff.

Sgt. Mello reached a vantage point and could see Tucker below, floating face down in a cove, CCSO said. The Sergeant notified dispatch that Tucker was dead.

CCSO called in for help from the Coast Guard to reach and recover Tucker's body, while the SAR rope team and swimmers prepared to make the recovery if the Coast Guard could not. Rescuers were able to rappel down to James Maloy and got him to safety.

A Coast Guard helicopter team arrived and lowered a swimmer outside of the cove, allowing the swimmer to travel 200 yards in and pull Tucker back outside of the cove. Once outside, the helicopter crew hoisted Tucker's body and delivered her to SAR members and other first responders near the spot where she had originally fallen.

CCSO said that Tucker's body was carried up the trail to the parking lot, where she was released to Redwood Memorial in Brookings.

"The Curry County Sheriff’s Office sends our condolences to the family of Glenda Tucker and thanks to the other agencies that responded to help," the agency said in a statement.
