NEAR SAMS VALLEY, ORE. -- Neighbors used hoses to douse a trailer fire Saturday afternoon, before crews arrived.
"We came running out here and we went to hook the hose up," neighbor Terry Morgan said. Morgan said Kevin Hicks, the man accused of starting the fire, ran to call 911, but took his time to get back to the flames.
"He was walking real slow, taking baby steps," Morgan said. "About 45 seconds later we heard the sirens."
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says Hicks killed his estranged wife, Tammy Hicks. He has a history with domestic violence, and was arrested last October for assaulting Tammy.
He's facing several charges, including murder, abuse of a corpse in the second degree, and arson in the first degree.
Morgan says Hicks also lied, saying Tammy wasn't in the trailer.
"My brother yelled to him and asked if there’s anybody in the trailer and the man said no," Morgan says.
Tammy was a mother to four children. A GoFundMe is helping raise money for them, and other family members are caring for them.
Hicks was arraigned on his charges today, and will appear in court again July 10.
Investigators with the Jackson County medical examiner’s office say the official identity of the person killed in the trailer is tentative. They they will likely need to rely on dental records or DNA comparisons to make an identification. An autopsy will take place later this week.
