KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — The doubters have been silenced. The Mustangs are your Oregon State champs.
Medford defeated Eugene, 5-4, on Tuesday.
This is the 6th time in a row that Medford has hoisted the final trophy. Only one other Oregon American Legion team has won six state championships in a row (Portland, 1943-1948).
The Mustangs came out swinging, scoring three early runs in the first inning. Medford never looked back.
The Challengers managed a run in the 4th inning. Medford Pitcher Bennett Thompson only allowed that one run, after Eugene loaded the bases with only one out.
In the top of the 7th, Medford loaded the bases with no outs, forcing Eugene to make a pitching change. Eugene managed to get out of the inning with no runs scored.
Eugene pushed hard in the bottom of the 7th. Bringing in three runs and making it 5-4.
Then with the game on the line, Chase Costanti turned a double-play ending the game.
