MEDFORD, Ore. — During the month of November, NewsWatch 12 is shining a light on the issues that affect men's health. The Movember Foundation has been leading the charge since its inception in 2003.

James Pollerana with the foundation sums up its purpose. “The whole mission of Movember is to bring awareness for men’s health," explains Pollerana. "Prostate cancer, testicular cancer, suicide rates, that aren’t really discussed with men that common.”

That lack of discussion means preventable and treatable health issues are taking men early.

“Men’s health is in a state of crisis," states Pollerana. "And no one’s really talking about it. Men are experiencing worse long term health than women and we die on average 6 years before women. And there’s no real physiological reason for it.”

The foundation was formed in 2003 in Australia to shed light of these issues. They chose the mustache as their ambassador.

“The mustache is our hairy ribbon so we love seeing mustache everywhere," admits Pollerana. "Whether it’s a thin blond mustache that doesn’t show up, or if it’s a big, bushy one like myself, at the end of 30 days everyone’s gots something that’s pretty unique. And luckily mustaches are just like snowflakes, they’re all beautiful, no matter what they look like.”

Kelly Harrington with Fire District 3 is flying the flag, and raising money too.

“A lot of us grow mustaches from the beginning of November towards the end of November," says Harrington. "You can go online to Movember.com. Rogue Valley Firefighters has a site. You’ll see my pictures and others, and you can donate.”

Anyone can sign up to grow that mustache and raise money for the cause.

“You want to go to Movember.com get yourself a mo-space, get a profile so that people can find your face, support your cause," explains Pollerana. "We ask everyone to start clean-shaven on the first of Movember. Grow the mustache, just the mo. And just keep it neat. And when people ask why you’re growing the mustache, you let them know ‘I’m doing Movember. I’m raising funds and awareness for men’s health.’"

It could ultimately save someone's life.
