STIRLING CITY, Calif. -- The Butte County Sheriff's Office says a missing father and his two sons are safe.

Michael Mercado's wife says she called the sheriff's office to say a local citizen found them and drove them home.

Butte County Sheriff's deputies went to the house to confirm all three individuals were accounted for.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office said 25-year-old Mercado and his sons Matthew and Antonio, who are 7-years-old and 2-years-old, took their jeep to go hiking just above Stirling City on Sunday.
