Medford School District pledging $22,500 to lost scholarship funds

With donations to scholarships down 50 percent because of the financial impacts of COVID-19, the Medford School District plans to match up to $22,500 in donations.

MEDFORD, Ore. — Around 200 students apply for Medford School District scholarships every year. But this year, the donations that typically fund those scholarships are lacking.

It's mostly due to the financial impacts caused by the novel coronavirus that brought most of the working world to a halt, according to the Medford School District's communication specialist Natalie Hurd.

"We've noticed that the donations to our scholarship funds are down quite a bit, actually," Hurd said on Friday. "They're 50% lower than they've been in years past, and that's understandable."

To help make up that lost ground, the Medford School District is pledging to match donations up to $10,000 for both North and South High School and $2,500 for Central Medford High School.

"Without having those scholarships available to students, that burden then, for paying for college, is often placed directly on students' shoulders," Hurd said. "We know that's difficult and we don't want that to deter any of our seniors from going to college and pursuing postsecondary education."

Donations can be made by clicking here or by visiting the Medford School District's webpage and clicking the "Social Giving Scholarship" link.
