MEDFORD, Ore. — The Medford Police Department has identified a homeless man who was killed in an apparent stabbing behind the Albertson's shopping Center in the early hours of Saturday morning.
An autopsy was conducted on 48-year-old Ronald Leroy Satterfield on Monday, and Medford Police says that his next of kin have been notified of his death.
"The manner of death was determined to be homicide and the cause of death was sharp force trauma," the agency said. "The weapon, believed to be a knife, used in the homicide has not been located."
Police responded to reports of the assault shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday morning to a field behind the Albertson's at 113 N Ross Lane. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Satterfield suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Though firefighters and Mercy Flights paramedics tried to save Satterfield's life, he passed away at the scene.
After searching the area for about two hours, officers found and arrested 18-year-old Ethan Gabriel Guitierrez. He was taken to the Jackson County Jail on a charge of murder in the second degree. The case goes before a grand jury on Tuesday.
Detectives and volunteers from Jackson County Search & Rescue have checked the surrounding area and neighborhoods for the murder weapon, but have yet to find it.
