MEDFORD, Ore. — The Medford Police Department says that has made its third arson arrest in less than 12 hours linked to fires along the Bear Creek Greenway.
After responding to an apparent arson near Midway Road on Wednesday, detectives were still on the scene around 9:20 a.m. Thursday morning when they noticed a plume of smoke rising nearby, MPD said.
Alerting firefighters, the detectives went to the source of the smoke on foot. Arriving at the scene, the detectives found a man near the fire and questioned him.
"The detectives determined the male, who was camping where the fire occurred, had lit some property on fire belonging to someone else, and the fire got out of control," MPD said.
An MPD officer and the detectives tried to take the man into custody and he "resisted arrest," the agency said. He was handcuffed after a short scuffle.
The suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Terin Dante Hummel, was lodged in the Jackson County Jail for Arson in the First Degree, Reckless Burning, and Resisting Arrest.
