MEDFORD, Ore. – As the trucking industry shifts to more electric design, mechanics are having to adapt.
“The amount of like electronics on these trucks is tough so we need that younger generation that likes to play with electronics and has that natural background,” says Robin Duncan, a service manager at TEC Equipment.
In order to get more young people interested in mechanics, TEC Equipment implemented a tool program and on-board training program that pays entry-level technicians while they go through training and pays for their tools to get started.
“Guys coming out on the entry level can’t afford those tools,” says Duncan, “having that program available through our training program is helpful for us to get the guys in the door and give them an opportunity.”
TEC Equipment says that while they do have a training program for entry-level workers, they also hire trade school graduates. Less than two years after graduating high school, Charles Decker, a graduate from Grants Pass High School, is working at TEC Equipment. Decker went through a nine-month program at a technical college in Wyoming just to get some more experience.
“It’s a fraction of the cost of what a four-year college would cost you; even RCC, they have a great program, it’s two years old,” says Decker.
Even before graduating, Decker had his job with TEC Equipment lined up.
“You’re set up before you even come home. I had an interview with TEC Equipment before I got home so it really helped me get my foot in the door,” says Decker.
At TEC Equipment, technicians are paid during their training. Entry level technicians start anywhere from $14 per hour to $20 per hour. To see a full list of open positions click here.
