JOSEPHINE COUNTY, Ore. --It’s your voice and your vote --- currently, a large portion of rural Josephine County has doesn’t have a fire protection agency available to its residents unless they subscribe to one.
“It'll help people by first, creating a fire district that has standards of service currently in this unprotected area, as designated by the state of Oregon, there is no current set of standards, regulations, ordinances for fire district or fire department or emergency services,” Retired Firefighter Mark Jones said.
Jones is also a candidate for the Fire District Board. The board would be responsible for determining standards of coverage, annual budgets and operational policies.
“Once the board is created, they would create standards, ordinances and regulations for fire service coverage that would be the first thing that they would do,” Jones added.
Jones retired from City of Scottsdale Fire Department after a 28-year career.
"The other thing that I would like to see if I’m elected to the board would be an increase in a level of services that are currently available to the subscribers now," Jones went onto say.
According to Josephine County Democrats, if Measure 17-98 is passed, it would create an independent rural fire district that would provide service in these areas not currently served by a fire district.
"The fire district would have authority to create ordinances that would apply for this district," Jones adds.
