Many Ashland businesses impacted by gas outage

2-3 days is a long time for businesses to be without gas.

ASHLAND, Ore-- More than 4,500 people are without gas tonight in Ashland. This gas outage impacts Avista customers. Avista says it could be up to 2-3 days before the outage ends. 2-3 days is a long time for businesses.

Gas provides hot water and runs certain equipment like driers. Some restaurants closed for today because of the outage. Others have a limited menu to stay open.

The Ashland Springs Hotel warned guests when they checked in about the outage. It informed guests that hot water for showers won't be available. Plus the rooms would not be heated. The hotel is providing loads of blankets and space heaters. Scott Brandstetter is the assistant general manager. He says the hotel has enough clean linens stocked for new guests. The hotel is also working with it's sister hotels like Lithia Springs, which is not impacted by outage, for guests to go to if they would like to switch.

This outage could have a big impact on revenue. Scott Brandstetter says, "potentially yes, not only in our food and beverage but also in our rooms division. This could potentially be the difference between profitable quarter and a quarter where we are looking up."

Suds Ur Duds in Ashland had to close today, because of the outage. Without gas there isn't any hot water and the driers won't work. Christin Hill is the owner of Suds Ur Duds. She says, "so I came down right away to close it up so people aren't trying to use the driers when they are not working. There' is also no hot water." She says the busiest times are the afternoon and evenings. So having the business closed just for tonight is a loss of revenue already.

This outage is not impacting all of Ashland. Some restaurants and businesses like in the downtown plaza are getting gas. Some businesses I spoke to said they didn't have gas this morning, but it came back on this afternoon.

Avista says they don't know the cause of the outage yet. They are bringing in crews to work on this from as far away as Spokane. We will continue to update you on this as we get more information the next few days.
