MEDFORD, Ore. -- Crafters from near and far came to Medford today to take part in the opening of the newest Hobby Lobby. Some were so excited they decided to celebrate with tailgate party - Hobby Lobby style.
Nancy Hawkins organized the tailgate. "We thought it was appropriate to come out and have a little Hobby Lobby tailgater," she explained. "We got sandwiches, little brownies, sparkling cider, fruit punch and friendship."
The scene was busy from even before the store opened at 9:00 a.m. Many people drove around and around the parking lot looking for a space to open up. Hawkins and her friends explained how much excitement the grand opening gave them. "We love to craft and make beautiful things and make beautiful things for our home," she said. "And this store's got it all!"
Jeanette Nieman and her friend Jan Bothwell also went to Hobby Lobby for the grand opening. Then they headed over to Michael's for some additional items. We went to Hobby Lobby when they opened like a lot of other people did," she detailed. "Now we're coming to Michael's to pick up what we didn't get at Hobby Lobby."
"I like Michael's because they have a lot of the things I look for which is crafting for card making," echoed Bothwell. "But I'm very excited for the Hobby Lobby because they have even more and plus they have decorations. And I like the policies of the store."
While some people expressed concern the new Hobby Lobby could hurt business at Michael's, most felt it was a boon for local business. "I think actually it's going to be really good for our economy," said Bothwell. "Because it's going to be a hub of craft supply stores and people from more areas are going to come out and shop."
