KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — The non-profit organization Friends of the Children (FotC) are coming up on their annual fundraiser (or 'Friend-Raiser'), set for Thursday, May 31.
Although they started in Portland, FotC has spread to major cities throughout the nation—making the Klamath Basin, their one rural location, something unique.
The program itself is at the very least uncommon. FotC takes children starting in kindergarten and pairs them with professional mentors—mentors that stay with them until they graduate from high school, 12 and a half years. The hope is that with some consistent guidance, at-risk kids can be steered toward college and away from drugs or teen pregnancy.
However, FotC does not receive any state or federal funding, so the entire scope of their yearly activities depends on what donors contribute at the annual Friend-Raiser.
The fundraiser takes place next Thursday between 5 and 9 :30 p.m. at Mike's Fieldhouse at Steen Sports Park (you can find the Facebook even here), ticket prices vary, and they are available for direct purchase here. The event includes music, food, introductions to the program and staff, and both live and silent auctions.
