KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Law enforcement officers have arrested a Klamath Falls man who allegedly fled the state temporarily after shooting another man in the head late last month, according to Klamath Falls Police.
Officers responded to 2044 Reclamation Avenue on Sunday, February 23, following reports of a shooting. When they arrived, the officers found a man "with a gunshot wound to the chin and head area," Klamath Falls Police said. The victim was rushed to Sky Lakes Medical Center where he was reported to be in critical condition.
An investigation into the shooting led officers to develop probable cause for the arrest of 25-year-old Joel Alejandro Mendoza of 933 Richmond Street.
"Officers also determined Joel Mendoza fled the state shortly after the shooting took place, and he was thought to be out of the area," Klamath Falls Police said.
On Tuesday, detectives found out that Mendoza had returned to his home on Richmond Street in Klamath Falls. The agency said that Mendoza surrendered to law enforcement shortly after 4 p.m. with help from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Basin Interagency Narcotics Enforcement Team (BINET).
Mendoza is now in the Klamath County Jail on charges of Assault I, Assault II, Assault III, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
