KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- The first and only recreational marijuana store is now open in Klamath Falls. A Better Way Medicinal Alternatives, LLC. held its grand opening Monday after a soft opening last week. A long line outside of the store formed down the street before the store even opened. This is a result of Klamath Falls voters passing a measure to allow for recreational marijuana sales within city limits back in November. The law went into effect at the start of the year. It is still illegal in Klamath County. The owner of A Better Way Medicinal Alternatives, LLC. Edward Medina, Jr. said the road to legalization has been long and is far from over.

“Our goal is to show our officials that this is not a negative thing for our community, that it's a positive,” said owner Edward Medina, Jr. “There's a lot of work to do still. This is an entire industry and this store is just the tip of the iceberg. A lot of folks told us we never would [open]. This is a pretty big deal. We definitely see it as the beginning and not the end so we still have a long way to go.”

Customers like Pat Riley said having access to a store in the city was well worth the vote and wait.

“The ability to get medication has gotten closer and closer to me which is a sign of it becoming more mainstream. The more we normalize it and make people realize that not everyone is using a hackie sack or talking about hemp clothing--some people are actually using it to relax,” Riley added.

Before the store in Klamath Falls opened, customers had to either drive to Medford or up to Chiloquin. Chiloquin's first store, Green Knottz, opened about a month ago.
