Klamath County reports one new COVID-19 case

The counties of Southern Oregon have all submitted plans for reopening to the Governor's Office, and are expected to enter Phase One on Friday.

MEDFORD, Ore. -- Local public health officials began announcing new confirmed cases of the coronavirus in southern Oregon and northern California as of Monday, May 11. Numbers from each individual county will be updated below as soon as NewsWatch 12 receives their latest figures.

JACKSON:

On Monday, Jackson County Public Health said that it had received no new positive test results for COVID-19, leaving the total at 49. The last confirmed case was announced on Friday, April 24 — more than two weeks ago.

Of the 49 total cases, Jackson County says that at least 40 have fully recovered. Nine cases are still being monitored by public health staff.

"Governor Brown emphasized that by taking steps gradually and carefully and following science and data, Oregon can begin to reopen safely," the County said in a statement. "Jackson County submitted its COVID-19 Reopening and Prerequisites Status and Plan, as the county believes they have met the prerequisites set forth by Governor Brown to enter into the first phase of reopening. These requirements to reopen Jackson County are based on clear public health criteria and signs our health care system is able to respond to a spike in new infections."

Public health officials say that they expect to see cases rise in Jackson County and throughout the state as businesses begin to reopen. They urged that people continue to practice social distancing, proper hygiene, and wear face coverings to help protect those who are more likely to have complications from COVID-19.

"For people who are at risk of developing severe complications from COVID-19, it is best that you continue to stay home as much as possible, even if you feel well," the County said. "If you chose to access services during the reopening phases, be sure to wear a face covering, remain 6 ft. from all people, and follow good hygiene and disinfection practices."

KLAMATH: 

Klamath County Public Health reported one newly confirmed case in the county on Monday, bringing the countywide total number of confirmed cases to 40. Importantly, County officials also reported that 33 of those cases have recovered and are no longer active.

The County said that 2,477 total tests have been processed  as of Sunday, May 10.

Based on the County's demographic data, 26 of the confirmed cases are women, and 14 are men. Five of the 40 cases have been hospitalized for the virus. Seven cases have been between the ages of 20-29, nine in the 30-39 age group, seven in 40-49, nine 50-59, six 60-69, one 70-79, and one in the 80 or older group.

JOSEPHINE: 

On Monday, Josephine County Public Health officials reported no new cases of coronavirus, leaving the county total of confirmed cases at 21. Eighteen people have reportedly recovered from the virus.

The agency also said that it would follow new reporting strategies from the Oregon Health Authority, reporting presumptive positive cases alongside confirmed cases.

"Presumptive cases are those without a positive diagnostic test who present with COVID-19-like symptoms and had close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 patient," Josephine County said. "If an individual with a presumptive case tests positive for COVID-19, that case will be moved from the 'presumptive' tally to the 'confirmed' tally. However, if an individual with a presumptive case tests negative for COVID-19, that case will remain in the 'presumptive' tally."

There are currently four presumptive cases in Josephine County.

The county marked the first death attributed to the virus in southern Oregon on April 11, an 81-year-old man.

As of Wednesday morning, a total of 1,3528 COVID-19 test results from Josephine County have returned negative.

CURRY:

All four of Curry County's confirmed cases have reportedly recovered as of April 29. The County reports that 201 people have been tested and returned negative results.

SISKIYOU:

Siskiyou County officials say that there remain five confirmed COVID-19 cases in the county, and all five of those people have since recovered from the illness.

There have been a total of 342 negative test results, and 11 tests remain pending.
