KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- Southern Oregon farmers and ranchers who haven't been able to prepare for tax time because of the government shutdown are finally catching a break.

The United States Department of Agriculture is temporarily re-opening some Farm Service Agency offices across the U.S., sending 2,500 federal employees back to work.

The FSA office in Klamath County is among those offices re-opening for a short period of time. FSA employees are being temporarily recalled to finish processing payments made in 2018 to insure the FSA provides 1099 tax documents to borrowers by the deadline.

The office will only be open Thursday, the 17th, Friday, the 18th, and Tuesday, the 22nd. Monday, the 21st is a federal holiday.

County Executive Director Laura Hall said workers can only help farmers with existing loans.

"If you are wanting a new loan, then you can request some information, but processing is not happening at this point, but we will be able to process once we get going again," Hall said.

Hall said it's important to remember the office can only help with a small scope of what they normally could.

Workers won't be able to assist with these services:

  1. New direct or facility loans
  2. New guaranteed farm loans
  3. New marketing assistance loans or Farm Storage Facility Loans
  4. New applications or certification for the Market Facilitation Program
  5. Margin Protection Program for Dairy
  6. Disaster Assistance Programs
