GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Another person has died from COVID-19 complications in Josephine County, public health officials reported on Tuesday evening.

An 83-year-old man tested positive for the virus on July 19 at Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass. He passed away on Monday, August 3 at his home. He had underlying medical conditions, Josephine County Public Health said.

The agency reported the death of a 33-year-old man last Friday — ostensibly the second death of a Josephine County patient — but now says that this case "has been removed from the county’s records at the direction of the Oregon Health Authority." Public health officials said last week that the man was not a Josephine County resident, but tested positive and began receiving treatment in the area.

"As he did not return to his area of residence for treatment, the patient was considered an Active Case for Josephine County. However, through quality assurance and follow-up investigation, it was found that the patient was a documented resident in another state," public health officials said.

Josephine County marked the first death attributed to coronavirus in southern Oregon, an 81-year-old man, on April 10. Since then, a woman in her 70s has died in Klamath County, and Jackson County reported the death of a 65-year-old man last week.

Josephine County Public Health did not provide any further details about the 83-year-old man who died on Monday.

As of Tuesday night, Josephine County reported a total of 107 COVID-19 cases — 88 confirmed amd 19 presumptive. Of the total cases, 43 are considered active.

This is a developing story and will be updated with more details as they emerge.
