MEDFORD, Ore. — Jackson County Public Health reported three more deaths attributed to coronavirus on Friday, bringing the county death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 57.

One of the fatalities happened this week, but two others happened in November — likely reflecting an ongoing reckoning with death certificates routed through the CDC that have been flooding back to state officials this week for reporting.

Jackson County said that a 76-year-old man tested positive on November 19 and died on December 16 at Ashland Community Hospital. He had underlying conditions.

An 89-year-old woman tested positive on November 12 and died November 25 at her residence, and a 76-year-old man tested positive on November 20 and died on November 27 at his residence. Both had underlying conditions, officials said.

Jackson County Public Health also reported 76 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday. While cases no longer appear to be peaking to the extent seen at the end of November and into the first week of December, neither have they fallen to pre-November levels.

Public health officials continue to warn that people should observe the state's "Extreme Risk" precautions through the holidays in order to cut down on spread of the virus — wearing masks and avoiding gatherings or travel — with widespread vaccination against COVID-19 still months away.

"There are many ways to recognize and celebrate the holidays and still stay safe. It’s wise to consider participating in activities that are a lower risk so that you and your loved ones remain healthy throughout the season," Jackson County Public Health said. "This year will look different from other years. We know it’s disappointing not to gather and celebrate as you usually would, but it will be worth the effort to stay safe."
