CENTRAL POINT, Ore. -- An advisory panel to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention voted Wednesday to recommend Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine for use in kids ages 12 to 15. Now that age group is eligible to receive the vaccine in Oregon.

The Jackson County Vaccination Equity Center at the Expo is now vaccinating youth ages 12 to 15.

“Now we have the opportunity to vaccinate more individuals in our community and again that puts us towards that goal of creating herd immunity and it allows us to really get our community back to where we were pre covid and make it a safer environment for all of us to be,” said Tanya Phillips, Health Promotion Manager with Jackson County Public Health.

Jackson County Public Health says that people can register for an appointment on the Jackson County Public Health's Website or call 211. Appointments are encouraged, but they are not required.

“So far the reaction has been pretty positive. When the FDA released their approval, we started to receive a lot of calls from parents about where to access it and where they could access it you even at that point, we were getting people showing up to both the Pfizer and Moderna looking to vaccinate their children,” Phillips added.

Annamarie Noon, who is a substitute teacher, brought her 14 -year-old daughter to get vaccinated and she feels like today is a step in the right direction.

“It’s means that she may be able to go back to school and see her friends again before the end of the year and not worry about getting sick," Noon said.

Noon, who substitutes teaches for schools from Ashland to Grants Pass, got vaccinated in February — the first chance that she could get.

“You know, being able to go out more and just getting back to a normal life,” Noon added.

Public health officials say that parent or guardian consent is required to vaccinate people 12 to 14 years old. It also adds a parent or guardian needs to be present with them during their vaccination appointment at the Jackson County Vaccination Center at the Expo and sign the needed documents.
