CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. — The Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) has selected its new Fire Chief, according to a statement issued on Tuesday. In a unanimous vote on Monday evening, the Board of Commissioners voted to offer the position to John Holmes of Elko, Nevada.
The former Fire Chief Dennis Hoke announced his impending departure in August after more than six years with the agency, accepting an offer to become Chief for the Scappoose and Columbia River Fire District. Since then, IVFD Deputy Chief Gavlik has acted as interim chief.
According to IVFD, the process of selecting a new chief has included written applications and interviews by panels of "technical experts," members of the community, Fire District staff, and the commissioners.
"The Board voted unanimously to offer the position of Fire Chief to John Holmes, of Elko, Nevada," IVFD said. "The offer is contingent upon successful employment contract negotiations between Mr. Holmes and the IVFD Board of Commissioners."
Holmes has 19 years of experience in fire service, with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. He is also working on a Master's in Emergency Management, and is certified as a paramedic. He currently serves as Fire Marshal for the City of Elko, where he's served since 2016.
If the contract negotiations are successful, Holmes will start on February 1 of 2020. At the time of Chief Hoke's departure, IVFD anticipated having the position filled by November 1 of this year.
