MEDFORD, Ore. -- Phone and computer scams are common, especially surrounding tax season.

A NewsWatch 12 staff member received a call from a IRS scam that alleged that the IRS was pursuing a lawsuit, saying, "inform you that IRS is filing a lawsuit against you. To get more information about this case file, please call immediately on our department number at 202-239-1714. I repeat it, 202-239-1714. Thank you."

Our NewsWatch 12 staff contacted the number that was given and heard this message, "The number you have reached is no longer in service."

Jeff Thomas, the owner of Connecting Point, a local tech store, told NewsWatch 12 that the best way to protect yourself from scam phone calls is to hang up.

"If somebody's asking for your information or asking you to give them something, just hang up and don't answer the phone call. You can certainly block those phone calls."

There are a number of ways to protect yourself from scams including changing your phone number, ignoring unknown numbers, signing up for the no-call list on the Federal Trade Commission website, or by downloading one of the many apps designed to block unknown callers.

However, Stephen Mayer with the Better Business Bureau says that you need to do your research before downloading any apps, "You have to read the fine print of those sort of apps because they could be collecting a lot of private information. What is their privacy policy, what information are they collecting, and more importantly, how are they protecting that information."
