UPDATE--Auriel Zipher Scattergood, 30, has been arrested in this morning’s homicide near Ashland. Scattergood has been charged with Murder in the 2nd degree, Assault in the 2nd degree, and Aggravated Animal Abuse.
The victim’s name will be released pending notification of next of kin. The victim’s dog was injured in the altercation and received emergency care at the Southern Oregon Veterinary Specialty Center.

ASHLAND, Ore. — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) is investigating a homicide that occurred early Wednesday morning on Eagle Mill Road outside of Ashland. The agency says that a suspect is in custody.
The call to dispatch came in around 2:15 a.m.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Department was assisted on scene by Oregon State Police, Ashland Police Department, Phoenix Police Department, and Talent Police Department. The Major Assault and Death Investigative Unit (MADIU) has been called out to investigate.
Next of kin are being notified, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department will release an update when more information when possible.
Currently, Eagle Mill Road is closed between N Valley View and Butler Creek Rd; the expected opening is approximately noon on Wednesday.
