Heat and winds challenge firefighters on Antelope Fire, River Complex

After days of progress, weather conditions have conspired to renew activity on the system of fires burning in Siskiyou County.

ETNA, Calif. — High temperatures and renewed winds are testing fire crews still working to contain the Antelope Fire and River Complex fires in Siskiyou County this week, spreading spot fires and breaching lines built by firefighters over the past week.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office lowered evacuations on the Antelope Fire this week, including for the embattled community of Tennant, but fire officials warned that there is still danger in the area with the firefight far from over.

"A strike team from the California Office of Emergency Services has been posted at the fire station in Tennant to provide 24-hour coverage for the town," officials said Thursday. "A single tree flared up and ignited a small section of vegetation in Tennant, however, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly with no further damage."

Residents are being allowed back into Tennant, Bray, and Antelope Sink, but they remain under an evacuation warning. Residents have to show proof of residency to gain access to their homes.

Firefighters are working to contain a 400-acre spot fire that crossed fire lines at Picadilly Ridge and spread into the Antelope Canyon area. A structure protection group was deployed to Duck Lake to install sprinkler systems and wrap buildings in fire-resistant material to lower the chances that they'll burn if the fire continues to encroach.

The main fire made a run across control lines on Garner Mountain, heading southeast toward Tamarack Flat during the late afternoon on Wednesday. Aircraft from other nearby fires came in to help suppress fire activity in the area.

The Antelope Fire was estimated at 44,839 acres with containment at 24 percent as of Thursday morning.

To the southwest, evacuation orders remain in place for multiple communities around the River Complex fires, including Cecilville, Summerville, and Petersburg. The areas of Sawyers Bar and Coffee Creek past Sugar Pine Campground in Trinity County remain under an evacuation warning.

Fire officials said that crews are working to maintain the gains that they made over the prior two weeks, while also shoring up structure defense in the Cecilville and Summerville communities as they brace for the change in weather.

The most fire growth is expected on the east side of the Haypress Fire, the largest in the complex, with rapid spread toward the ridge between the Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests.

As of Thursday morning, the River Complex fires were estimated at a total of 32,649 acres, with containment at 10 percent.
