WHITE CITY, Ore. — The electronics industry doesn’t have enough workers to fill open job positions. Most industry workers have a 2-year degree — and the Rogue Community College has a great program.

Dr. Ann Trausch, an electronics instructor at Rogue Community College, says in her 19 years of teaching she’s never seen an electronics graduate unable to find a job.

“There’s actually more demand out in industry than what we currently have graduates for. We have jobs right now that are being unfilled in the valley,” said Trausch.

The electronics industry is growing, and it’s expected to grow by 10 percent in the next 10 years.

Christopher Thomas is a student in the electronics program. He started because he has an interest in computers but he finds comfort in knowing that he’ll be able to find a job in the field he has a degree in. Thomas says his favorite thing about the program is the way the classes are taught.

“It’s very hands on, you kind of get in the middle of things. On week 1 you show up, you’re grabbing parts, you’re working with things instead of just discussing the theory of things you’re getting to see it actually happening,” Thomas said.

There are many different career paths students can take, but a common one is an electronics technician job, paying an average salary of almost $60,000 a year.

“If you’re a maker — and you like do it yourself kinds of projects, this is a perfect program for you,” said Trausch.
