Grants Pass might ban smoking in most downtown areas

The current city ordinance in Grants Pass says smoking and vaping are not allowed within 10 feet of any business entrance, exit or window.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- The Grants Pass city council is voting on an ordinance that would limit secondhand smoke exposure to the public. The proposed changes would restrict smoking in the city and redefine smoking to include vaping.

Newswatch12's Cassidy Delamarter showed us how the new law would impact smoking in city parks and on sidewalks in downtown.

Jan Bertaggia, owner of The Emporium, said, "We would have to make designated smoking areas in the area like the alleys and I don't want my customers hanging out in alleys."

Bertaggia's shop is in the heart of downtown Grants Pass. This is the store's five year anniversary and Bertaggia said she's never had a problem with cigarette smokers near her store.

"I think it's just another discrimination against smokers in the town. We already have a 10-foot perimeter for no smoking near doorways."

The current city ordinance in Grants Pass says smoking and vaping are not allowed within 10 feet of any business entrance, exit or window. That could change after Wednesday's council meeting.

Kimberly Underwood, Josephine County Tobacco Coordinator, said, "It's hard to determine where that 10 feet is, so other communities like Cave Junction and other places in Southern Oregon have extended that out to a 20-foot zone."

The council will vote on whether or not to adopt a 20-foot ordinance. This would ban smoking in most of the areas in downtown.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death. An annual report from the Oregon Health Authority reveals over 500,000 people smoke tobacco products every day in Oregon and nearly half of those people are diagnosed with a tobacco illness at some point during the year.

"It's a really sad statistic that we would like to work with other communities as well as the state of Oregon in here locally especially to ensure that we're moving in a direction to see if we can change that," Underwood said.

Stay tuned for updates on the council's decision.
