MEDFORD, Ore. — A Jackson County grand jury on Thursday officially charged a man suspected of stabbing another man to death last Friday north of the Wimer community.
According to the Jackson County District Attorney's office, the grand jury indicted 20-year-old Brenden Rex Stansell on a charge of Murder in the Second Degree.
Deputies responded to the Elderberry Flats area on Friday evening, finding a man dead at the scene. He was later identified as 23-year-old Matthew James Joseph Stephens.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said later that Stephens had been staying at the homes of friends in the area. Authorities have not said if the two men knew one another, nor released any details about the circumstances of Stephens' murder.
Stansell was scheduled to appear in court on September 29, but the indictment on Thursday caused that date to be cancelled. An arraignment will be scheduled soon, according to the DA's office.
