MEDFORD, Ore. — A Rogue Valley writer accused of killing her uncle in 2016 pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge on Wednesday and was sentenced to prison for more than six years.

30-year-old Aisling Tucker Moore-Reed was accused of murdering her uncle, Shane Reed, on July 26 of 2016. Moore-Reed previously reported for the Grants Pass Daily Courier, wrote blogs, and published several books. She also appeared in an independent horror film.

According to the Jackson County District Attorney's office, Shane had been in a dispute with Kelly Moore, Aisling Moore-Reed's mother, over a property in the Ruch area.

On the day of Shane's death, he'd arranged for a notary to come out to the property at 7201 Thompson Creek Road to sign some documents. Moore-Reed, her mother, and her grandmother Lore Moore — the property owner — were meeting with the notary inside the home when Shane arrived.

"During this time Shane Moore came to the door to ask what was going on," the DA's office said. "Shane Moore and Kelly Moore had a conversation at the door."

Moore-Reed reportedly picked up a gun, came to the door, and told Shane to get out of the house. The District Attorney's office said that she then pulled the trigger, shooting Shane in the chest. He died at the scene.

When Moore-Reed was taken into custody in 2016, she was initially charged with Manslaughter in the First and the Second Degree. Prosecutors later brought in a charge for Murder as the investigation into the case deepened. Moore-Reed maintained that she shot her uncle in self defense.

"The defendant and her mother provided statements to detectives about what transpired on July 26, 2016, and the fear they believed they were in," the DA's office said. "However, their statements were not consistent and were not corroborated by the video depicting the incident."

At the time of the shooting, there were pending assault charges against Shane Moore — with Aisling Moore-Reed as the victim — stemming from an incident in September 2015. Witnesses also testified that Shane had made threats against Moore-Reed and her mother.

"The video showed that it was approximately 20 seconds from the time Shane Moore came to the door of the residence and when the defendant shot him," the DA's office said. "These facts were taken into consideration. However, when viewed in totality with all the facts, to include the video of the incident showing Shane Moore's behavior as non-threatening, the defense of self-defense or defense of others was not applicable under Oregon law."

Ultimately, Moore-Reed pleaded guilty to a Manslaughter in the Second Degree charge on Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court. Judge Barnack sentenced her to 75 months in state prison, with three years of post-prison supervision.

"At the sentencing, the defendant stated she was very sorry for the pain she caused her family," the DA's office said.
