MEDFORD, Ore. — A former Klamath Falls Police Department detective arrested in December now faces charges in federal court on allegations that he stole drugs from the agency's evidence room.

The investigation into 27-year-old detective Thomas Reif began after he crashed his unmarked police car while on duty in downtown Klamath Falls during November of 2020. Witnesses said that Reif had been driving recklessly prior to the crash, and he was discovered unresponsive in the vehicle when paramedics arrived.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon, Reif went into the KFPD temporary evidence room at the end of November and used an unauthorized key to take out methamphetamine and fentanyl. Reif allegedly left the evidence room, then brought back the items to the evidence locker before leaving the station.

"Shortly thereafter, Reif overdosed while operating his police car," the U.S. Attorney's Office said. "The car jumped a median, travelled into oncoming traffic, and caused a multiple-vehicle accident. Reif was rushed to the hospital and successfully revived by medical personnel. Toxicology reports showed that Reif was under the influence of substances including methamphetamine and fentanyl."

Investigators later searched Reif's locker at the police station, federal prosecutors said, finding a concealed evidence bag containing meth.

This week, prosecutors unsealed an indictment against Reif, charging him with two counts of possessing a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception, or subterfuge.

Reif made his first appearance in federal court before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on Wednesday. He was arraigned and entered a plea of not guilty. He was released pending a jury trial set to begin on August 3.

"If convicted, Reif faces a maximum sentence of four years in federal prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000," the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

This case was investigated by the FBI and Oregon State Police, with cooperation from the Klamath Falls Police Department.

In early 2019, Reif and two other KFPD officers received commendations for saving the life of a woman attempting to jump from on overpass.
