FLORENCE, Ore. -- A well-known Florence couple is dead after an apparent boating accident early Monday morning. The Novelli’s Crab & Seafood Facebook page announced the death of Kyle and Amber Novelli later that day.
“Sharing their love of crabbing was always their dream,” the post said.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded to reports of a fishing vessel sinking near Florence in the early hours of Monday morning after the boat struck a jetty on the Siuslaw River Bar, forcing the crew to abandon ship as it took on water.
Rescue teams were able to find one crew member alive and responsive, but two people — now identified as the Novellis — were found unresponsive over the next few hours.
"We are reminded during these times, that the ocean is unforgiving, and can be a treacherous place to work and recreate," said Senior Chief Petty Officer Jay Nilles, addressing the local community. “This highly unfortunate loss of two members of our close community deeply saddens all of us. We continue to stand by you in this time of need and healing."
According to a GoFundMe page, the Novellis had four children and three grandchildren. Flowers are being accepted to add to a memorial for the Novellis. You can find the GoFundMe page here.
“Thank you everyone for all the love you’ve given my mother for the past few years,” the post from Novelli's Crab & Seafood said.
The restaurant will be selling what’s left of their cooked crab before closing the shop for the forseeable future.
