GRANTS PASS, Ore.-- The Pacific Veterinary Clinic says as of February 14th, there have been at least three cases of canine influenza diagnosed in the state of Oregon.
The canine influenza virus has a few strains.

Pacific Veterinary Clinic says the virus affecting dogs appears to spread faster, shed longer, and have the potential to make dogs more sick than previously seen strains.
This virus is contagious up to 3 days before any signs are shown in dogs and can be contagious up to weeks afterwards.
The Pacific Veterinary Clinic says most times the influenza usually causes mild illness such as a runny nose and cough.
About 8% of infected dogs will develop severe illness, such as pneumonia, which can be fatal.
There are vaccines available for the two most common strains of influenza.
Consult your veterinarian about the decision to vaccinate your pet.
