TENNANT, Calif. — The Antelope Fire in eastern Siskiyou County has caused another round of evacuation orders from the Sheriff's Office as fire crews continue to struggle against high winds and incredibly dry conditions.
The evacuation order issued Monday morning included the Medicine Lake, Bullseye Lake, and Blanche Lake areas, visible on the interactive evacuation map. An evacuation center is located at the Kahtishraam Wellness Center at 1403 Kahtishraam in Yreka.
Fire officials say that fire made a half-mile push to the east through Tamarack Flats near Garner Mountain over the weekend, moving wthin 1.5 miles of Forest Road 15, also known as Davis Road. Crews have managed to slow the fire near an existing dozer line, with plans on Monday to work around the new growth to connect with an existing line south of the fire spread.
Firefighters have also been responding to numerous spot fires igniting ahead of the main fire, particularly during the late afternoon hours as daytime temperatures reach their peak.
As of Monday morning, the Antelope Fire was estimated at 54,742 acres with containment at 27 percent.
Crews have made progress on containment lines from Typhoon Mesa southwest around Stephen's Butte, and continuing west from False Gap toward the Harts Meadow area. They are now working to connect this line with other from West Haight Loop heading south.
"Firefighters are using masticators, dozers, and other machinery to build containment lines from Shasta Wood to Swamp Creek," officials said. "Crews are implementing protections for Harts Meadow to minimize impacts to the land and springs."
Structure protection crews are still working to assess and bolster structures throughout all areas of the fire. The northernmost fire perimeter is still believed to be secure, and firefighters continue to patrol these areas to extinguish any remaining pockets of heat.
A Fire Weather Watch will be in effect on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Officials said that dry air will end any potential thunderstorm threat, but gusty winds will continue through the evening. Temperatures are expected around 85-91 degrees in lower elevations and 78-85 degrees on the mid-slopes and ridges.
