Southern Oregon will get a look at a new wildfire response tool next week – while it looks back at Southern Oregon.
Cave Junction will be the location for the first of three new video cameras intended to identify and locate fires.
The Rogue Valley Council of Governments says the device is the Southern Oregon Region’s first camera using the ALERTWildfire system. The system allows cameras to swivel, look up or down and zoom to better monitor fire behavior.
The Council says it is working with Oregon Hazard Lab at the University of Oregon on Tuesday’s first camera installation.
They expect the camera’s video to help fire responders scale their responses, inform evacuations and ensure contained fires are monitored until they fully extinguish.
The Council and Hazard Lab plan to pursue grant funding for ten to 12 additional cameras for urban areas and locations adjacent to them in Southern Oregon.
