GRANTS PASS, Ore-- Late Sunday morning, Rural Metro Fire and AMR and Oreong State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 southbound near milepost 67.
According to police a preliminary investigation revealed that three vehicles were southbound on I-5 when a collision occurred.
According to first responders, two of vehicles collided, landing on top of each other. Two people inside a Buick LCR that crashed, Rolland Wytcherley (85) of Wolf Creek and Maria Wytcherley (72), were rescued by firefighters and transported to Three Rivers Hospital.
But the driver of the Toyota Sienna, Denise Watts (37) of Medford, who also needed to be extricated, was pronounced dead at the scene. The family of that driver has been notified.
The third car, driven by Wendy Lynn (58) of Grants Pass was not injuried during the crash.
Then around 30 minutes later, another crash was reported northbound near milepost 71 in Sunny Valley. According to rescue crews, they found a utility truck had left the freeway, and had crashed into some trees.
That driver was transported with serious injuries to a local hospital.
Investigators are still attempting to determine the exact sequence of events but believe poor visibility from rain and fog was a factor.
Oregon State Police is currently investigating both crashes.
