EAGLE POINT, Ore -- Veterans Day is three weeks away. Some people are wondering how much support our community will be showing to our veterans this year.
Last year at this time, the Medford Parade was cancelled. There's still no word on whether it's coming back this year. NewsWatch 12 did confirm the Eagle Point walk and ceremony is back this year.
During the walk and ceremony you will see the Avenue of the Flags. "We raise some flags, because of the Avenue of Flags that are casket flags and the boy scouts will put up 6 flags as part of the ceremony." said Bob Pinnell. He is the President of the Eagle Point Chamber of Commerce and one of the main organizers of the Veterans Day event. "We do that, because we want to honor our veterans." said Pinnell.
This year for Eagle Point is different. Pinnell is getting a bunch of calls from veterans. "With the cancellation of last year's parade in Medford, we've gotten a lot more interest in the event we have out here in Eagle Point." said Pinnell.
Last year veterans were not happy about the Medford Parade getting cancelled. "I was disappointed, because it's a time for veterans to come out and show the community that we are here." said Larry Rupp. He is a Commander for Department of Oregon Military.
Today NewsWatch 12 tried reaching out to the Medford American Legion and the Rogue Valley Veterans and Community Outreach. Last year, RVVCO had to cancel the Medford Parade, because they didn't have enough volunteers. I wanted to see if the parade would be back this year or any event. After multiple calls, a Facebook message and even a visit to the American Legion Building. I still don't have an answer.
However, the Eagle Point Ceremony may have it's own parade in the coming years. "We are building on this hopefully next year it will be a little bit bigger." said Pinnell.
