Construction wraps on Medford veterans' housing units

ColumbiaCare announced Friday that its 16 affordable housing units for veterans are complete.

MEDFORD, Ore. — Construction on a block of affordable housing units intended to serve local veterans is now complete, local mental health organization ColumbiaCare announced on Friday.

ColumbiaCare broke ground on the housing complex in July of last year. Now, the 16-unit supportive housing program at the corner of Stewart and Columbus is ready to welcome in local veterans who were otherwise homeless, or at risk of being homeless.

“We are thrilled to be adding this much-needed housing to our existing Veterans services continuum” said Joseph Chick, Veterans Services Director. “We know just how important housing is for people’s safety, health and wellbeing; and that also, unfortunately, there isn’t currently enough available. These apartments are going to help fill that gap.”

The Stewart Avenue Apartments will include an on-site Resident Manager to welcome new residents and support them while they live in the buildings, and features an office and community room for tenants to engage in social activities or classes once COVID-19 restrictions have eased.

ColumbiaCare said that the veterans "could not be more excited" to get keys for a place of their own. All of the units are already accounted for, and the veterans should be moving in as early as Monday.

“While it is very exciting that we are opening a new apartment complex, I think the most important stories are those of each individual Veteran; their sacrifice and service, the commitment and courage they have shown in addressing challenges in their lives, and now the hope and possibility that comes with having their own place to call home," said Chick. "This is going to change their lives for the better, and it could not be a more deserving group.”

ColumbiaCare thanked the state and local partners that helped support and fund the project, particularly the City of Medford and Oregon Housing and Community Services.
