WHITE CITY, Ore. — Deputies and a SWAT team descended on a house near White City on Monday as the Jackson County Sheriff's Office followed up on evidence recovered in a car chase that happened last week.
On December 27, deputies pursued a silver Mercedes along Highway 62 in the Shady Cove area until the driver was stopped pulling into a private driveway. Mike Moran, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, said that suspects were arrested and investigators recovered the vehicle.
The driver, 30-year-old Michael Bradley Herlikofer of Shady Cove, was lodged on three warrants for Failure to Appear, Attempting to Elude a Police Officer-Vehicle, Giving False Information to Police Officer, Distribution of Schedule II Controlled Substance, Possession of Schedule II Controlled Substance, and Possession of Schedule III Controlled Substance.
The passenger, 27-year-old Tiffany Anderson Burke of Eagle Point, was initially lodged for a probation violation. While being booked at the jail, authorities added additional charges for Possession of Controlled Substance - Heroin and Meth when drugs were found on her during lodging.
Investigation of that elude case led officers to a home in the 3800-block of Antelope Road shortly after 6 a.m. on Monday morning. Moran said that the Sheriff's Office was primarily looking for weapons.
"Several people were at the location at the time of the warrant being served," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "One resident did not submit to arrest initially and hid in an outbuilding, a detached garage."
Believing that the second suspect may have been armed, officers set up a perimeter — lobbing tear gas and flashbang grenades into the outbuilding. The suspect, 28-year-old Jaime Castro, still did not emerge. Eventually deputies stormed the building and arrested Castro.
Castro was lodged on an Oregon State Parole Board Parole Violation, Failure to Appear on Dangerous Drugs charges from Josephine County, Resisting Arrest and Interfering With a Police Officer.
59-year-old Robin Kutala, who was also found at the house, was cited and released for Possession of Controlled Substance - Meth. Officers arrested 32-year-old Kevin Lee Hughes of Eagle Point on a warrant for Contempt of Court.
Moran said that any reported shots fired likely referred to the sound of stun grenades going off, and that no one was shot or seriously harmed in the incident.
