MEDFORD, Ore. — In March, then-Senate Republican leader Herman Baertschiger, Jr. announced that he would not seek re-election to the Oregon Senate District 2 seat, leaving it up for grabs.
District 2 covers most of Josephine County and the northwestern area of Jackson County — including Grants Pass, Rogue River, Central Point, White City, and Eagle Point. Baertschiger ran unopposed in 2016, and the area has swung Republican for decades.
Nevertheless, Baertschiger's departure has cleared the way for two candidates, both hailing from the Illinois Valley, to step forward.
Though Democratic candidate Jerry Allen and Republican candidate Art Robinson live in the same area, their views diverge — particularly when it comes to the environment.
NewsWatch 12 spoke with both candidates on Friday to find out more about what each candidate would bring to the office.
Interviews with both candidates may be viewed above.
