MEDFORD, Ore. -- New Year’s Eve is the busiest night of the year for cab companies like Valley Cab in Medford. So it's making sure there are enough drivers on the road to get people where they need to go safely. Many of us are starting off 2018 celebrations with fireworks, champagne toast and New Year’s Resolutions. Many cab drivers are ringing in the New Year on the road.
"It's the busiest night of the year. We have our full crew going, of course, plus a couple of extra drivers. A couple day drivers are working the night shift tonight. It's the one night of the year that is always busy, no matter what," said Valley Cab owner, Craig Owen.
From his company alone, there will be seven cars getting people from point A to point B. Ordinarily, he said, Sunday nights are a little slow, but New Year’s Eve no matter what day it falls on, is always the exception.
"It’s still going to be crazy out there. It just always is. It doesn't matter if it's on a Sunday or a Wednesday. Of course Friday and Saturday are going to be a little bit busier. It's still by far the busiest night of the year," Owen said.
Owen’s is glad they'll be busy. That means more partiers will be in the backseat of his cars than in the front seat of their own.
"We get a lot of people off the road that would end up in jail. You can take a cab back and forth hundreds of times in Medford from city limit to city limit for the cost of a DUII," Owen said.
He added the cost of a New Year’s Eve cab is nowhere near the fine or jail time that comes with a DUII or putting your life and other's around you in danger.
There are a few local companies offering free tows and rides on New Year’s Eve. They are Dick’s Towing and Star 24 Hour Towing.
