YREKA, Calif. — Officers with California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrested the driver of a pickup truck on Sunday following a high-speed chase near the town of Gazelle, according to the agency.
Just before 5 p.m., a Yreka-based CHP officer tried to pull over the driver Ford F-150 reportedly going over 100 miles per-hour. The driver kept speeding away, exiting the freeway and heading southbound on State Route 3 toward Fort Jones, CHP said.
"Officers and a Sergeant then backed off and positioned themselves at strategic locations to corral the suspect," the agency said.
CHP officers deployed a spike strip after catching sight of the driver again at the top of Scarface Road near Gazelle. All four of the suspect's tires popped after he went over the strip.
According to CHP, the driver then jumped out of the truck and ran away, letting the pickup continue to roll.
"The F150 slowly rolled and the passenger exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident," CHP said. "The F150 continued slowly, as the left side rolled up an embankment and overturned onto its side."
Officers found the driver hiding under some brush, and he was taken into custody without further issues. CHP said that the man was "obviously impaired" and was taken to Fairchild Medical Center for evaluation before booking.
The driver had a fake ID and would not identify himself, CHP said. He was booked for felony evading a peace officer, delaying or obstructing a peace officer, and a number of other charges. CHP and Siskiyou County Jail staff are still working to determine the suspect's real identity.
"The Yreka CHP wants to remind all drivers about the dangers of driving at high speeds," CHP said. "Speeding is one of the leading causes of death on California's roadways. And as always #RedLightPullRight."
A second pursuit happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, when a CHP officer tried to stop a driver on I-5 northbound just south of Yreka. The driver was reportedly following too closely and weaving.
The driver exited the freeway into Yreka and continued to flee, but ultimately managed to evade officers. That chase is still under investigation.
