CHILOQUIN, Ore-- The Bootleg Fire has already burned more than 200,000 acres of land, destroyed hundreds of strctures, including 67 homes and 117 outbuildings according to the Klamath County Sheriff's Office, and forced thousands of people into temporary shelters.
But tonight, Saturday July 17, NewsWatch 12 has learned from fire officials working on the Bootleg Fire, that the blaze is nearing 300,000 acres but that the fire could actually in fact be even larger.
The latest updates from fire officials that NewsWatch 12 spoke to, say that the Bootleg Fire has consumed 290,196 acres of land and containment remains at 22%. However, those same officials state that those estimations were from an infrared scan taken during the night of July 16.
Officials stated that those scans were not processed completely until roughly 8:30 p.m., July 17th, meaning that the blaze may have already in fact surpassed 300,000 acres.
NewsWatch 12 was told that there was a problem finalizing the data today which has caused a delay in updating the fire growth sooner. Officials would not state what the problem was.
Fire crews say that another infrared scan is planned for tonight and will be taken in the next couple of hours, which will give the public a better outlook at how large the Bootleg Fire has grown since the early hours of Saturday morning.
